Afrobeats Losing Its Spark – Slimcase Blasts Colleagues For Repeating Same Sounds

Nigerian singer, Oluwafemi Oladapo, popularly known as Slimcase, has voiced his concerns about the current direction of Afrobeats.

In a post shared via his Instagram page, Slimcase argued that Nigerian artists are putting themselves under unnecessary pressure by churning out too many songs and albums within short periods.

He wrote:
“Too many songs, too many albums. You all are stressing yourselves too much in this Nigeria. Take a chill pill and do it like Rihanna—explore other things, then return with fresh vibes.

“Your sounds are becoming boring because you’re dropping too much in one year. I only owe fans one song this year, and that’s it. It’s only God that is new every morning. Releasing singles and albums every day and every second is gradually killing Afrobeats. It’s not fun anymore.”

Meanwhile, fellow singer Omawumi has reflected on how ace producer Cobhams Asuquo played a pivotal role in reshaping her career.

During an interview with Hip TV, she recounted how Cobhams unexpectedly reached out to her for a collaboration.

She said:
“The first time we spoke, he just called. I knew we met on the show, and he said, ‘Omawumi, this is Cobhams Asuquo’—you know he likes to funkify his name. He told me there was a song he wanted me to do. I agreed, not realizing it would change my career.

“I did the song, and then the agency picked it up. I became the brand ambassador for that product for two years. Cobhams taught me so many nuances about delivery and posture.”
