Recent developments indicate a growing movement to extend Damagum’s tenure beyond the scheduled NEC meeting, despite a previous consensus reached in Akure last week. During that meeting, party governors and members of the National Working Committee (NWC) agreed that Damagum should resign at the upcoming gathering, a decision intended to ease ongoing tensions within the party following its defeat in the 2023 presidential election to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, sources close to the party have revealed to Daily Trust that certain factions, led by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, are now advocating for a delay in Damagum’s resignation. The proposed plan suggests that he step down voluntarily after the November 16 Ondo State gubernatorial election, providing what supporters term a “soft landing” for the acting chairman. This new strategy seems to be gaining traction among Damagum’s loyalists, driven by the North Central zone’s perceived delay in naming a successor.
