Crisis Within PDP Worsens As Upcoming NEC Meeting Faces UncertaintyThe Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing escalating internal conflict in the wake of its defeat in the 2023 general election, where the All Progressives Congress (APC) maintained power. Despite efforts by party stakeholders, including governors, to resolve the leadership crisis, a clear solution remains out of reach.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HEREā–¶

The upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, originally anticipated as a turning point for the party, is now shrouded in uncertainty. Scheduled for October 24, this meeting has already been delayed twice—first from August 15 due to members attending a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia and then again from September 26 because of incomplete state congresses, leaving several key positions unfilled.

As the new date approaches, concerns are mounting about whether the NEC will address the contentious issue surrounding Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum’s tenure. Sources indicate that a significant number of party governors believe Damagum should step down. However, unresolved matters, including the withdrawal of court cases and the selection of a replacement from the North Central zone, are causing delays.

One party insider noted that the inability to resolve these key conditions raises doubts about whether the NEC meeting will proceed as planned or be postponed again, further prolonging the party’s divisions. The insider stated, ā€œWe need those who went to court to withdraw their cases, and the North Central zone needs to choose a replacement. None of these steps have been completed yet, so even if the NEC takes place this Thursday, another meeting might be necessary in December to finalize the transition.ā€

Compounding the uncertainty are numerous unresolved internal matters requiring the NEC’s attention. Tim Osadolor, a NEC member and the PDP’s Deputy National Youth Leader, emphasized the need to complete ongoing state congresses, particularly in Abia, Ebonyi, and Edo, before the party can make progress. ā€œThere are several issues that NEC needs to resolve, but many are still pending. The Ondo State governorship election is approaching, and state congresses in places like Abia, Ebonyi, and Edo are not yet concluded. Anambra’s congress was postponed last week due to security concerns, and we still have five or six states with unfinished congresses,ā€ Osadolor explained.
