Agony In Service: Anambra Corps Member Exposes Assault And Dehumanization

Elohor, speaking in an interview with media personality Aprokoking on Wednesday, said the incident happened on July 13, around 5 p.m., at the lodge where she and other corps members resided.
According to her, she and her colleagues were indoors when they heard a series of aggressive knocks at their door.
“At first, we assumed the knock was meant for our neighbours, since the building has several flats. But it became louder and more violent. Before I could reach the door, it was forcefully kicked open,” she recalled.
She explained that a masked, gun-wielding man without any form of identification or uniform stormed into the room.
“At first, I thought he was an armed robber until he ordered us outside. I tried to explain that we were corps members and even suggested showing our NYSC ID cards. My colleagues also presented theirs, but they ignored us,” she said.
The corps member alleged that the intruders ransacked their room, seized their phones and laptops, and subjected them to violence.
“They pushed us downstairs, nearly throwing me off the staircase. They kept questioning why I, as a woman, dared to challenge them. Outside, we finally saw their vehicle and realized they were members of the Anambra Vigilante Group,” Elohor narrated.
She further revealed that when they pleaded to contact their lodge proprietor or NYSC officials, the vigilante operatives became more brutal.
“They beat me, tore my clothes, and struck one of my colleagues with an iron rod for trying to defend me. They dragged me into their vehicle, pressing my neck, slapping me, and threatening to smash our phones if we called anyone,” she added.
A viral video published by PUNCH Online on Tuesday confirmed the incident, showing armed vigilante operatives storming the corps members’ lodge, accusing them of being internet fraudsters despite their NYSC identification cards. The footage also captured the female corps member being beaten while crying for help.
The attack has sparked outrage on social media, with Nigerians demanding justice and condemning the vigilante group’s actions.
Reacting to the backlash, the Anambra State Government confirmed that the operatives responsible had been identified, arrested, detained, and dismissed from service.
