Represented by Deputy Senate Leader Senator Lola Yisa Ashiru, Akpabio made this appeal during a one-day sensitization program organized by the joint Committee of the Senate and House of Representatives on Drugs and Narcotics in Abuja. He stressed the importance of parental involvement in safeguarding the future of their children.
The event, held in collaboration with the National Association of Nigerian Drugs Monitoring (NANDRUM), brought together school children, stakeholders, and civil society organizations. Speaking on the theme “Parents’ Inclusion in the Fight Against Drug Abuse and Reckless Behaviours,” Akpabio highlighted that parental engagement is crucial in this battle.
He stated, “If we tackle the epidemic of drug abuse at home, society will be better for it. Involving parents brings the fight against drug abuse to the grassroots level, addressing issues before children become addicts or traffickers.”
Akpabio asserted that the best legacy parents can offer is proper guidance to help their children secure a brighter future. He warned that neglecting signs of drug abuse can lead to devastating consequences for their lives.
“I urge all parents to embrace this responsibility with determination. The greatest gift a parent can give is not wealth, but the spirit of adventure, the virtue of integrity, and the courage to face challenges. Let us equip our children with the tools they need to navigate life without falling prey to drug abuse,” he added.
