Senate President Akpabio addressed the tragic incident during a courtesy visit by Governor Mutfwang and traditional leaders to his office. He expressed condolences, emphasizing the need to strengthen town planning regulations.
“We extend our condolences on the building collapse. It was a devastating sight, and the structure wasn’t even constructed during your tenure. This underscores the importance of reinforcing town planning laws and showing keen interest in the construction sector,” Akpabio stated.
He stressed the importance of impartial enforcement, asserting, “No matter whose interests are involved, any building found to violate regulations—whether obstructing water passages or having questionable foundations—should be demolished.”
Acknowledging historical challenges, Akpabio highlighted societal perceptions that exempt certain structures from scrutiny due to the status of their owners. He reaffirmed solidarity with the grieving community, speaking on behalf of the 10th Senate.
Governor Mutfwang noted that their visit coincided with their attendance at the National Assembly’s public hearing on the Nigerian Institute of Mining and Geosciences (Repeal and Enactment) Bill, 2024.
