Speaking at a press briefing in Jos, Prof. Samson Duna, Director General of the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute, shared key observations from the panel’s investigation. Led by Prof. O.F. Job from the University of Jos’s Building Department, the team identified several structural deficiencies in the collapsed building, noting signs of distress and the use of substandard construction materials.
“The preliminary investigation indicates that the building exhibited distressing signs,” Prof. Duna stated. “Concerns were raised about the quality of concrete, lack of adequate reinforcement between concrete and steel, and insufficient footing sizes.”
He added that a comprehensive report detailing further findings would follow the ongoing investigation. Prof. Duna urged governmental and professional bodies in the construction sector to prioritize integrity tests for distressed buildings, particularly those surrounding the collapsed site.
Highlighting systemic challenges, he emphasized the need for regular inspections and stricter penalties for non-compliance to prevent future tragedies. The director general suggested collaborative efforts among stakeholders, including government agencies and professionals, to adopt global best practices in construction safety.
In related developments, Senate President Godswill Akpabio met with Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang and traditional rulers, extending condolences and urging reinforced enforcement of town planning laws to avert future incidents. Akpabio underscored the importance of impartial enforcement regardless of social status, stressing the need for strict adherence to building regulations.
Governor Mutfwang, accompanied by his delegation at the National Assembly, participated in discussions related to the Nigerian Institute of Mining and Geosciences (Repeal and Enactment) Bill, expressing hope for his state to host the institution.
