Akpabio Opens Up on Wife’s Six-Month Coma, Says She Was 98% D**d
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has recounted the harrowing experience surrounding his wife Unoma’s prolonged stay in a German hospital, revealing that she spent six months in a coma after an operation went wrong.
Akpabio said his wife was placed on life support and was, in his words, “98 per cent dead” during the medical crisis. He made the disclosure while speaking with St Padre Pio TV/Radio during a visit to the Prayer Ground of St Padre Pio in St Giovanni Rotondo, Italy.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Akpabio said he had travelled to the religious site to offer prayers and give thanks for his wife’s recovery, describing the visit as his 10th to the prayer ground.
He recalled that while his wife remained in a coma, he sought divine intervention and prayed for her recovery after the surgery reportedly went wrong.
“My wife was in a coma for six months in a hospital in Germany. She was 98 per cent dead. I used the picture of Pio to make a sign of the cross on her, instead of taking off the life support machine she was on. She had an operation that went wrong,” Akpabio said.
According to the Senate President, his wife eventually regained consciousness in what he described as a miraculous recovery. He said the hospital had been unable to explain how she recovered.
Akpabio further revealed that even after being discharged, his wife needed several months before she could fully remember him and their children.
“When my wife was finally discharged from the hospital, she waited for three months before she could remember my name and those of the children,” he said.
He added that the experience inspired his family to honour St Padre Pio by giving their son the baptismal name Pio and establishing the Pio Football Academy, which provides training and scholarships to children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Beyond his personal experience, Akpabio said he and other Nigerians visited the prayer ground to pray for peace in Nigeria, particularly an end to insecurity caused by banditry and terrorism.
The Senate President described the location as a holy ground and said his personal experience had strengthened his belief in the intercession of St Padre Pio.
“We are all from Nigeria. We came to offer prayers and get blessings from God for ourselves, our families, and our dear country that is currently being ravaged by banditry and terrorism,” he said.
Akpabio said the visit also gave him an opportunity to express gratitude for his wife’s recovery and to seek further prayers for Nigeria and its people.
