Akpabio emphasized the need for stronger bilateral ties between Nigeria and China, especially in light of a decline in Chinese aid commitments to Africa. He pointed out that the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) pledge fell short of the $60 billion pledged in 2015.

Calling the occasion “filled with promise and possibility,” Akpabio stressed the importance of further deepening the cooperation between the two nations. “While China’s trade relations with Africa have continued to grow, I want to take this opportunity to urge the Chinese government to increase aid flows to Africa, particularly to Nigeria,” he said.

He also highlighted the potential for mutual growth, encouraging China to tap into Nigeria’s vast resources and vibrant culture through increased investment in the country. “We aspire to build a partnership that not only strengthens our economies but also deepens our cultural and social ties,” Akpabio added.

On the legislative front, Akpabio proposed the establishment of a Nigeria-China Parliamentary Friendship Group to foster deeper collaboration and exchange of ideas between the two countries’ legislative bodies. “This will be a mutually beneficial relationship that enhances parliamentary learning and strengthens cooperation,” he said.
