Bello had been on the run since April, when the EFCC declared him wanted after he repeatedly ignored summonses and attempts to arrest him. Initially facing 19 charges of money laundering involving N80 billion, the charges were later revised to 16 counts with the amount increasing to over N110 billion.

The EFCC alleges that Bello and his co-defendants used illicit funds to acquire 12 properties in Abuja. Despite several court orders, including one from the Court of Appeal, Bello had evaded trial, prompting ongoing attempts by the EFCC to bring him to justice.

Sources suggest that Bello’s former successor, Governor Usman Ododo, may have played a role in facilitating Bello’s escape during an EFCC raid in April. In September, the ex-governor visited the EFCC headquarters but left without being questioned, keeping his status as a wanted individual. A fresh public summons was later issued by Justice Maryanne Anenih of the FCT High Court for him to appear in court to face charges of criminal breach of trust.

After the summons expired, EFCC operatives finally apprehended Bello on Tuesday around 12:59 p.m. Following several hours of interrogation, he remains in custody ahead of his scheduled court appearance.

The EFCC is set to present Bello before the FCT High Court today, where he will face the 16-count charge. A source within the commission confirmed that the former governor will be arraigned, stating, “This arrest presents an opportunity to bring him to court after evading trial for so long.” Efforts to contact both the EFCC spokesperson and Bello’s media team for comment were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
