Akpabio Speaks On 2027 Election: “Campaigns Will Not Distract National Assembly

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has assured Nigerians that political campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections will not interfere with the legislative responsibilities of members of the National Assembly.

Akpabio gave the assurance while speaking with journalists at the Presidential Wing of the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The Senate President recently convened a meeting of All Progressives Congress (APC) critical stakeholders in the Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District, where President Bola Tinubu, Akpabio and Governor Umo Eno received unanimous endorsements to seek re-election in 2027.

Speaking on the issue, Akpabio maintained that electioneering and legislative duties are separate responsibilities and that one should not disrupt the other.

He noted that lawmakers belong to different political parties and would therefore not be campaigning at the same time. According to him, campaign activities can be scheduled for afternoons and evenings, allowing lawmakers to dedicate their mornings to parliamentary duties.

He said:

“We were elected for four years and we are going to work for four years. Anybody that is walking on the tiny rope must be able to do the balancing act. We are politicians and campaigns would start very soon. Campaigns can be fixed in the afternoons or evenings while we do our work in the mornings.

“It is not a problem at all. It is not everybody that will go for campaign at the same time because we belong to different political parties. Nothing will affect legislation. We will continue to make laws to take care of the needs of the people. It has never affected the work of the parliament.”
