The Labour Party’s leading candidate, Olumide Osaigbovo Akpata, has released a powerful statement addressing the ongoing fuel crisis in Edo State and across Nigeria. Fresh from a tour of the United States, Akpata expressed deep concern over the long-standing fuel challenges and laid out his vision for sustainable, long-term solutions.
Akpata, reflecting on his return to Edo after connecting with citizens in the diaspora, described his disappointment at the worsening fuel queues and rising prices of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). “The sight of our fellow citizens queuing for hours to purchase fuel at exorbitant prices, the palpable frustration in the air, and the ripple effects on every aspect of daily life have deepened my resolve to address these pressing issues,” Akpata said, underscoring the broader economic and societal impacts of the crisis.
According to Akpata, the fuel crisis is not an isolated issue but rather a reflection of deeper systemic problems. He emphasized that while fuel price hikes are painful, the crisis impacts small businesses, transportation, and daily survival for ordinary Nigerians. “This compounded crisis urgently requires comprehensive, well-thought-out solutions,” he declared.
Akpata also touched on the controversial removal of petrol subsidies and the floating of the Naira, policies that have compounded the economic woes of citizens. He criticized the federal government’s approach, calling it “misguided at best and detrimental at worst.” According to the Labour Party candidate, the lack of foresight and empathy in implementing these reforms has intensified the suffering of everyday Nigerians.
However, Akpata offered a glimmer of hope with his call for more sustainable approaches to energy security. He praised the Dangote Refinery’s recent commencement of refining PMS but noted that it “cannot be the panacea to our fuel crisis.” Instead, Akpata advocated for rehabilitating existing refineries, encouraging private sector participation, and diversifying the economy to address the root causes of energy challenges.
In the lead-up to the Edo State Gubernatorial election, Akpata urged Edolites to seize the moment as an opportunity for real change. “The APC and PDP have consistently failed to address our fundamental issues, bringing constant hardship to our people,” he stated. His message was clear: the upcoming election is a chance to break from the past and embrace a future prioritizing Edo’s welfare through fresh ideas and innovative solutions.
Akpata’s confidence in turning Edo State into a model of good governance was evident in his closing remarks. “With the right leadership, guided by compassion, competence, and genuine commitment to public service, we can transform Edo State into a model of good governance and economic prosperity.”
As September 21 approaches, Akpata called on all Edolites to reflect on the future of the state and use their vote as a powerful tool for change.
