The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State has filed a petition with the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC), accusing the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Barrister Musa Aliyu, SAN, of violating court orders……CONTINUE READING
The petition, signed by Barrister Shamsi Ubale Jibril and shared with news outlets, alleges that ICPC operatives unlawfully raided the home of the interim caretaker of Rimin-Gado LGA at night, arresting and detaining him despite a subsisting court order preventing such actions. According to ALGON, the High Court in Kano had issued an ex-parte order on August 27, 2024, restraining ICPC and other parties from harassing, arresting, or detaining the applicants.
The petition states, “We submitted a Motion ex-parte on behalf of our clients, which the court granted, ordering the ICPC and others to cease any harassment or attempts to arrest the applicants until the matter could be heard in full. Despite this, ICPC officials, under the direction of Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, continued to pursue our clients, violating the court’s order.”
ALGON detailed instances of ICPC’s defiance, including text messages, letters demanding the applicants report to ICPC offices, and a September 10, 2024, attempt to arrest one of the applicants. The petition further claims that despite filing a formal contempt motion and court discussions on the matter, ICPC proceeded to arrest and detain the chairman of Rimin-Gado LGA at night on September 13, 2024, violating the court’s explicit order.
The petition concludes by urging the LPPC to investigate the conduct of Barrister Musa Aliyu, ensuring that senior legal professionals admitted to the Inner Bar uphold the rule of law and maintain the highest standards of professional conduct.
