Aliko Dangote, President and CEO of the Dangote Group, has been appointed to the World Bank’s exclusive Private Sector Investment Lab, a key initiative focused on boosting investment and job creation in emerging economies.

Dangote’s appointment is a significant milestone, placing him among a select group of global business leaders tasked with steering private sector-driven growth in developing countries. The World Bank made the announcement on Wednesday, recognizing Dangote’s leadership in advancing economic development across Africa.

This expansion of the Private Sector Investment Lab comes at a crucial time, as the World Bank seeks to ramp up efforts to attract private capital and generate jobs in developing nations. Alongside Dangote, other prominent business leaders have joined, including Bill Anderson, CEO of Bayer AG; Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman of Bharti Enterprises; and Mark Hoplamazian, President and CEO of Hyatt Hotels Corporation.

The World Bank’s renewed focus on job creation is underscored by World Bank Group President Ajay Banga, who emphasized the pivotal role of the private sector in global development. “With this expanded membership, we are integrating this work into our broader operations and aligning it with our jobs strategy,” Banga remarked.

The World Bank stressed that this initiative is not driven by altruism but is focused on creating pathways for private sector investments that not only offer returns but also lift economies and improve lives in emerging markets. “It’s central to our mandate,” the bank affirmed, highlighting the vital role of private sector involvement in sustainable economic growth.
