On Thursday, Friday, a father of four, recounted that the police attacked him, broke his car’s side mirror, and threatened to shoot him near the NTA area of Ozuoba as he was about to end his shift on Wednesday evening. He had just helped three stranded passengers from the Obiri-Kwere area when he encountered the police at a checkpoint around 7 PM.
“The three passengers—two women and a man—were stuck because they couldn’t find transport, so I assisted them,” Friday explained. “As we passed AIT in Ozuoba, the officers demanded N100. I told them the passengers weren’t paying me, but they refused to accept that. One of them ordered me to pull over, and before I knew it, they broke my side mirror and attacked me. I insisted they fix it.”
Friday added that the altercation drew a crowd, and other police officers at the scene began to intervene and apologize for their colleagues’ behavior.
“The officers from the Choba Area Command need to be held accountable. Their treatment of citizens is unacceptable; we are all struggling,” he said.
He also mentioned that at one point, the officers threatened him with a gun and called on police authorities to address the conduct of their personnel during stop-and-search operations.
Attempts to contact the spokesperson for the state police command, Superintendent Grace Iringe-Koko, were unsuccessful as her phone was unavailable, and she had not responded to a text message at the time of reporting.
