Aloy Ejimakor Drops Fresh Revelation On Nnamdi Kanu Case, Says Terrorism Is Not the Issue
Counsel to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, Aloy Ejimakor, has argued that the central issue in his client’s case is neither terrorism nor treason, but his agitation for the actualisation of Biafra.
Ejimakor made the claim in a post on , describing Kanu as a victim of what he termed “prosecutorial overkill” by the Nigerian state.
The lawyer also alleged that the Federal Government misled the judiciary in the course of prosecuting the IPOB leader.
He wrote: “From day one, the bone of contention wasn’t terrorism or treason, but agitation for a separate state.
“He has always said that Biafra is a means to an end; if you don’t treat us well equally as Nigerians, then you let us go and have a separate state; that’s what Nnamdi Kanu was saying.
“MNK is a victim of prosecutorial overkill by the State and the judiciary was hoodwinked. What remains is the fix, and it shall come sooner than later.”
Kanu was first arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Lagos on October 14, 2015, over his activities with Radio Biafra and allegations relating to treasonable felony.
He was subsequently arraigned before an Abuja Magistrate Court in November 2015 before his case proceeded to the Federal High Court in Abuja.
On April 28, 2017, Justice Binta Nyako granted Kanu bail on health grounds. However, his bail was later revoked after he left Nigeria following a military raid on his residence in Abia State.
Kanu was arrested in Kenya on June 26, 2021, and subsequently brought back to Nigeria in what his legal team described as an extraordinary rendition. He was initially detained by the DSS before being rearraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
His case, which centred largely on his activities and agitation for the actualisation of Biafra, continued for several years.
On November 20, 2025, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment.
