The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has strongly criticized the recent approval of a 50% telecom tariff hike, calling it a tone-deaf decision that disregards the struggles of Nigerians already grappling with severe economic hardship and rising inflation.

The group argued that the increase is indefensible, particularly as many citizens are struggling to cope with the surging cost of living driven by hyperinflation.

On Monday, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved a tariff increase for telecommunications companies, allowing up to a 50% rise in service costs. According to the NCC, this adjustment aims to help operators cover escalating operational costs and improve service delivery.

Under the new rates, the cost of calls will rise from ₦11 to ₦16.50 per minute, SMS charges will increase from ₦4 to ₦6, and data prices will jump from ₦350 to ₦431.25 per gigabyte.

In a statement on Wednesday, CNG National Coordinator, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, rejected the hike, describing it as a direct attack on the dignity and survival of Nigerians.

Charanchi stated:
“The CNG categorically rejects the recent 50% hike in telecommunications tariffs sanctioned by the NCC. At a time when Nigerians are enduring significant economic challenges, this decision is nothing short of an assault on the dignity and livelihoods of already struggling citizens.

“We are deeply disappointed by the insensitivity and lack of consideration demonstrated by the NCC and the Federal Ministry of Communications in approving this exorbitant increase.

“In a period marked by hyperinflation, rising unemployment, and widespread economic distress, citing operational costs and industry sustainability as justifications for this hike without acknowledging the burden on ordinary Nigerians is utterly indefensible.

“This decision reflects a disconnection from the realities faced by millions of citizens and underscores the government’s failure to prioritize the welfare of its people.”
