Under the new law, mortuary attendants are obligated to report to the Ministry of Health any corpse that surpasses one month from its date of deposition. Violating this provision could result in a penalty of N100,000 or a six-month imprisonment, or both.
The legislation also mandates that all burial and funeral ceremonies for indigenous deceased individuals in the state must be registered with the town union of the deceased. Additionally, the law cautions against the obstruction of roads and streets during burial ceremonies, emphasizing that such actions require explicit permission from the relevant Local Government Authority.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo expressed his appreciation for the legislation, describing the Anambra Burial Law as a progressive measure designed to alleviate the burden on the less privileged and emancipate women from oppressive practices during funeral proceedings. He emphasized the state’s commitment to celebrating a “befitting living” and promoting dignified funerals.
