The Nigerian Church criticized Mullally’s elevation as the first female Archbishop and her endorsement of same-sex marriage, describing it as evidence of a “moral decline” within the Anglican Communion’s leadership.
In a statement signed by its Primate, Most Rev’d Henry C. Ndukuba, the Church called the October 3 announcement “devastating” and “insensitive.”
The statement read: “This election is a double jeopardy. Firstly, it ignores the convictions of the majority of Anglicans who cannot accept female leadership in the episcopate. Secondly, it is deeply troubling that Bishop Sarah Mullally is a vocal supporter of same-sex marriage.”
The Church referenced Mullally’s 2023 comments, when she described the Church of England’s approval of blessings for same-sex couples as “a moment of hope,” warning that her stance further exacerbates divisions within the global Anglican community.
“It remains unclear how the same individual expects to heal the already fractured Anglican Communion, which has faced a crisis over same-sex marriage for more than two decades,” the statement added.
Declaring that the Anglican world can no longer look to Canterbury for guidance, the Church of Nigeria reaffirmed its allegiance to the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON).
“As a member of the GAFCON family, the Church of Nigeria fully supports the GAFCON position and reiterates our commitment to uphold the authority of Scripture, historic creeds, evangelism, and holy Christian living, regardless of ongoing revisionist agendas,” the statement said.
The Church also urged Anglicans in England and worldwide to resist what it described as “ungodly teachings.”
“We encourage all faithful brothers and sisters in the Church of England who have consistently opposed same-sex marriage and other unbiblical teachings to continue contending for the faith once delivered to the saints (Jude 1:3),” it concluded.
