The crash occurred around noon on Monday, December 29, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, in front of Sinoma, before Danco, and reportedly resulted in the deaths of two persons.
In a statement issued on Monday, the sector’s spokesperson, Afolabi Odunsi, disclosed that the incident involved two vehicles, including a Lexus SUV with registration number KRD 850 HN, which was said to be conveying the former world heavyweight champion.
According to Odunsi, the driver of the Lexus attempted to overtake another vehicle from the right at high speed and subsequently collided with a stationary truck parked along the expressway.
“The crash was caused by overspeeding and wrongful overtaking, as the driver overtook from the right-hand side and rammed into a stationary vehicle,” he stated.
The FRSC confirmed that five people were involved in the accident. While two fatalities were recorded, one person sustained injuries and two others escaped without harm.
Odunsi added that personnel from the Sagamu Unit of the FRSC rescue team were swiftly mobilised to the scene immediately the incident was reported.
The corps also confirmed that Anthony Joshua was involved in the crash and sustained injuries, after which he was immediately evacuated from the scene by his security detail to an undisclosed hospital.
“However, it was confirmed that Anthony Joshua, the international boxing champion, was involved in the crash. He sustained injuries and was taken to an undisclosed hospital by his security personnel,” the statement said.
The FRSC further disclosed that the bodies of the two deceased victims had been deposited at the morgue, while debris from the accident had been cleared to restore free flow of traffic along the highway.
“The bodies of the deceased have been evacuated, and all obstructions have been removed,” the statement added.
Anthony Joshua, a former unified heavyweight boxing champion, is a native of Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The FRSC reiterated its call on motorists to avoid excessive speeding and unsafe overtaking, warning that such dangerous driving behaviours continue to result in avoidable loss of lives on Nigerian roads.
