Dan-Wanki criticized Abbas for appointing over 600 members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as Senior Legislative Aides, questioning the political judgment and loyalty behind these decisions.

According to Arewa PUNCH, Dan-Wanki, known for his advocacy of party unity and loyalty, issued a statement highlighting that these appointments have not only alienated key APC stakeholders but also risked weakening the party’s influence in the National Assembly. He stated, “Appointing members from the opposition party to strategic legislative positions could undermine the APC’s ability to effectively advance its agenda in the legislature.”

He further warned that if these appointments are allowed to continue unchecked, they could lead to further fragmentation of the APC and diminish the party’s power in legislative matters. Dan-Wanki characterized the Speaker’s actions as a “betrayal” of the trust placed in him by the APC caucus, arguing that it undermines the party’s strength in the House of Representatives.

“Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, who was elected as Speaker in June 2023, had committed to a more inclusive and bipartisan approach to governance. However, the recent appointments of over 600 Senior Legislative Aides, many of whom are reportedly PDP members, have sparked backlash from within his party,” Dan-Wanki noted.

This situation presents Speaker Abbas with a complex challenge. He must balance maintaining loyalty within the APC caucus while also striving to create a collaborative legislative environment. The long-term impact of these appointments is yet to be determined, but political observers are closely monitoring how it will affect Abbas’s standing within the APC and the dynamics in the House of Representatives.

“The APC worked hard to secure a majority in the House, and now we are witnessing a scenario where opposition members are receiving positions that should go to loyal party members. This is not only unacceptable but also indicative of misplaced priorities,” Dan-Wanki asserted.

In response, Abbas’s camp defended the appointments, claiming they were made based on merit and aimed at fostering cooperation across party lines in the National Assembly. They stated, “To effectively govern, we need a House that operates in unison, regardless of party affiliations. Our legislative duties transcend party lines, and we must ensure that the best people are in place to support the crucial work we are doing for the Nigerian people.”
