Aregbesola’s Actions Blocked Oyetola’s Re-Election Efforts, Claims APC OfficialA prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in Osun State, Sunday Akere, has made serious allegations against former governor Rauf Aregbesola. Akere claims Aregbesola actively undermined the second-term aspirations of his successor, Gboyega Oyetola, as part of a strategy to sabotage President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the 2023 presidential election.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
During an interview on the “Frontliners” program organized by the Osun State League of Veteran Journalists at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Press Centre on Thursday, Akere suggested that Aregbesola has been using Oyetola as a pawn in his political struggles against Tinubu, whom he views as his estranged mentor.
“The conflict isn’t between Oyetola and Aregbesola. Aregbesola aimed to challenge his former boss, using Oyetola as a convenient tool,” Akere stated. He emphasized that Oyetola had no personal issues with Aregbesola.
Akere, a former commissioner under Aregbesola, revealed that the rift between Aregbesola and Oyetola remains unresolved. He shared a recent conversation with a leader of the Omoluabi Progressives, who noted that Aregbesola’s faction has publicly distanced itself from Tinubu and is prepared to wait years to regain power, highlighting a significant divide within the party.
He criticized the national APC leadership for not addressing Aregbesola’s alleged anti-party actions, arguing that the local party lacks the authority to discipline such a prominent figure without national intervention.
In a bid to strengthen the party’s future, Akere announced that the APC has decided to endorse Oyetola as its candidate for the 2026 governorship election in Osun, expressing confidence in the party’s ability to defeat the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In response, Sola Fasure, a close ally of Aregbesola, dismissed Akere’s claims, stating, “APC is dead in Osun.” He accused Akere and Oyetola’s supporters of using Aregbesola’s name to gain relevance and secure federal appointments.
Fasure remarked, “If you ask who is APC in Osun now, you’ll only hear names like Akere, Kola Olabisi, and the party chairman—just a few remaining figures. They invoke Aregbesola’s name to create relevance for themselves. They are the ones causing the former governor (Oyetola) trouble, turning him into a prisoner of power.”
He added that Akere’s comments were a tactic to seek relevance, asserting, “He’s just trying to find a job or federal appointment by mentioning Aregbesola’s name and positioning himself against him.
