Sunday was allegedly arrested on Monday, October 20, 2025, around 2 p.m. along NTA Road in Ado-Ekiti by a military officer. He was first taken to Akure before being transferred to Abuja, according to his family.
His brother, Sunkanmi Afolabi, who resides in the United States, told SaharaReporters that Sunday’s only “offense” was speaking out about the welfare of regular soldiers deployed to Sambisa Forest, particularly highlighting their inadequate equipment and lack of support.
“The only thing my brother did was tell the truth about the conditions soldiers face in Sambisa,” Sunkanmi said. “He spoke about their welfare and poor equipment, and that alone led to his arrest.”
‘Handcuffed, Bleeding, Extremely Weak’
Sunkanmi recounted that during Sunday’s last video call with his wife on Wednesday, October 22, he appeared severely injured and distressed.
“In his last video call with his wife, he was handcuffed, bleeding, and extremely weak from torture,” he said.
The family has had no contact with Sunday since that call, intensifying fears that his condition may have deteriorated due to alleged torture and the lack of medical attention.
They also highlighted that Sunday suffers from asthma and requires ongoing medical care.
“Since then, we have had no communication, and we are deeply concerned for his life and health, especially given his asthma and urgent need for treatment,” Sunkanmi added.
He appealed to relevant authorities, human rights organizations, and concerned Nigerians to help ensure his brother’s safety and access to medical care.
“All we want is confirmation that he is alive and receiving treatment. Any support to ensure his safety would mean the world to us,” he said.
