The decisive moment came in the ninth minute when Eberechi Eze found the net following a well-worked short corner routine. Kai Havertz laid the ball off to the England international, who curled a superb strike into the top corner to give Arsenal an early lead.

The win saw Mikel Arteta’s side reclaim first place after slipping to second earlier in the week when Manchester City edged Burnley on goal difference, keeping Arsenal firmly in control of the title race.

Newcastle created chances before halftime through William Osula, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali, but were unable to find a breakthrough.

After the restart, Eddie Howe introduced Yoane Wissa and Harvey Barnes in a bid to spark a comeback. The visitors pressed late in the game, but missed opportunities, including a big chance for Wissa, proved costly.

The victory moves Arsenal three points clear at the top, although they have played one game more than Manchester City. The only concern for the Gunners was injury setbacks to both Havertz and goalscorer Eze, who were forced off before the final whistle.
