The decisive goal came just before halftime when Ryan Sessegnon reacted quickest to convert a loose ball after Raul Jimenez’s header was parried into his path, handing Fulham a crucial lead.

Bassey delivered another commanding performance in defence, playing the full match and helping to keep Aston Villa at bay with a composed display at the back. The Nigerian defender has now featured in 25 league games this season, scoring once and further establishing himself as a key figure for Fulham.

Chukwueze also impressed after starting the match and putting in an energetic performance before being replaced late on by Oscar Bobb. He has now recorded three goals and four assists in 19 league appearances this campaign.

The victory strengthens Fulham’s push for European qualification, moving them level on points with the final European spot and just two points behind sixth-placed Brighton in the early weekend standings. They could climb even higher depending on other results.

Fulham nearly extended their lead when Timothy Castagne found the net, but the effort was ruled out for a foul on Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez.

Villa, meanwhile, struggled to find their rhythm despite chances falling to Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers, with Unai Emery’s side appearing below their best ahead of their Europa League semi-final first leg against Nottingham Forest.
