Arsenal’s Shock Exit Sends Fleetwood Town Into Carabao Cup Quarter-Finals
League Two outfit Fleetwood Town have secured a place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after stunning Premier League champions Arsenal in a dramatic penalty shootout, earning themselves a potential showdown with either Everton or Newcastle United.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Fleetwood’s remarkable victory has made them the lowest-ranked team remaining in the competition, setting up an exciting challenge as they continue their unexpected cup run.
The club will discover their quarter-final opponents on Thursday, October 29, when Everton welcome Newcastle United to Hill Dickinson Stadium for the final fourth-round fixture. The winner of that encounter will travel to face Fleetwood in the last eight.
Defending champions Manchester City have been drawn against League One side Bradford City at the Etihad Stadium after overcoming Brighton and Hove Albion through a penalty shootout. City will be hoping to continue their title defence against lower-league opposition.
Crystal Palace, who eliminated Brentford from the competition, will host Sunderland at Selhurst Park in another quarter-final encounter.
Meanwhile, Liverpool are set to welcome Bournemouth to Anfield in an all-Premier League contest after defeating Chelsea in a dramatic penalty shootout. The result ended Chelsea’s hopes of progressing further in the competition.
Following the defeat, Chelsea coach Xabi Alonso played down the importance of the Carabao Cup in comparison with the Premier League, insisting that the club’s primary objective remains success in the domestic league.
“This is the least important competition for us,” Alonso said, adding that the Premier League remains the team’s main focus.
The Carabao Cup quarter-final draw has produced several intriguing fixtures, with Fleetwood Town’s clash against either Everton or Newcastle attracting particular attention following their impressive elimination of Arsenal.
Manchester City will face Bradford City, Crystal Palace will entertain Sunderland, while Liverpool will take on Bournemouth in what promises to be a competitive encounter between two top-flight sides.
The quarter-final matches are scheduled to take place during the week commencing December 14, with all eight teams aiming to secure a place in the semi-finals and move closer to lifting the Carabao Cup.
Fleetwood’s progression has added an exciting underdog storyline to the competition, as the League Two club prepare for another major test against established opposition.
