Arteta Faces Major Decision Over Max Dowman As Arsenal Open Door To Loan Move

Arsenal are prepared to consider sending teenage midfielder Max Dowman out on loan if the club determines that the move would be the right step in his development.

The 16-year-old has already made history with the Gunners, becoming the youngest player to score for Arsenal and in the Premier League last season. Although he has yet to feature in the Premier League this campaign, Dowman strengthened his case for more senior opportunities after scoring twice in Arsenal’s 4-2 Carabao Cup victory over Ipswich Town on Tuesday.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta remains keen to keep Dowman within his senior squad but has acknowledged that the club will continue to assess whether that remains the best environment for the youngster’s development.

Arteta explained that Arsenal would regularly review Dowman’s situation and make decisions based on his needs, the team’s requirements, available opportunities and the quality of minutes he is receiving.

“We will evaluate every six months where we are and what is the best thing for him to do and then make the right decision,” Arteta said.

Dowman will become eligible for a loan move after turning 17 on December 31, with the January transfer window opening the following day. Luton Town manager and former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has reportedly shown interest in taking the youngster on loan.

However, Arsenal have not actively explored loan options so far, with Arteta revealing that the club had initially been determined to involve Dowman in pre-season before assessing his progress.

The teenager made 13 appearances last season as Arsenal ended their 22-year wait for the Premier League title. Arteta also drew from his own experience of leaving home at the age of 17 to join Paris Saint-Germain, stressing that the success of a young player on loan can depend significantly on the environment and opportunities available.

For now, Arteta says the focus remains on keeping Dowman with the first team and giving him opportunities to make an impact, while Arsenal remain open to reconsidering his situation as the season progresses.
