Veteran journalist and publisher Dele Momodu has linked the public spat between Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke to political tensions, particularly Adeleke’s refusal to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In an interview with the Nigerian Tribune, Momodu noted that the APC operates with an “entitlement syndrome,” expecting all governors to align with the party. He suggested that the First Lady’s visible displeasure, captured in a viral clip from the Ooni of Ife’s 10th coronation anniversary, stemmed from the Governor’s political stance.

He explained: “I know why she is upset. She used to enjoy his singing and music when they danced together in Osogbo. I have video evidence of that. She is angry because the governor refused to join the APC.”

Momodu further argued that the APC’s aim is to consolidate power by ensuring every governor is in its fold. “The only thing that would give them joy and comfort is for all governors in Nigeria to join the APC. Then Tinubu can become an emperor in word and in deed. Anyone who does not join them is seen as an enemy,” he said.

Criticizing the public manner in which Adeleke was interrupted during his speech at the Ooni of Ife’s ceremony, Momodu called the episode avoidable and humiliating for a sitting governor in his own state. He stressed that, if proceedings needed to be expedited, more discreet methods should have been employed instead of a direct, public intervention.

He added that the controversy escalated due to poor management of public perception, noting that a simple acknowledgment of the misstep from the beginning could have quickly defused the situation.
