ASUU And NEWSFG Arrange Monday Meeting In Face Of Planned Nationwide Strike

The meeting follows ASUU’s issuance of a 21-day ultimatum to the government after their National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the University of Ibadan last week. ASUU is pressing for the implementation of agreements related to salaries, university funding, and improved working conditions.

Prof. Mamman confirmed that the government had received ASUU’s strike notice and assured that efforts were underway to prevent further academic disruptions. He highlighted the government’s commitment to resolving the issues and stated that the upcoming meeting would focus on reaching a resolution to avoid industrial action.

Mamman explained, “We received ASUU’s strike notice on Monday and reviewed the issues promptly. We will meet with ASUU to discuss these historic issues, some of which date back to agreements from 1981.”

He acknowledged the complexity of addressing all concerns simultaneously due to competing needs but expressed confidence that significant progress could be made within three weeks. Mamman emphasized that both the government and ASUU share a vision for a better university system but differ in their approaches.

“We are working to address these concerns pragmatically, focusing on what can be done in the short term and what may require more time,” he said. The government is also engaging with other agencies and finance colleagues to address specific issues raised by ASUU.

Key issues ASUU seeks to address include: concluding the renegotiation of the FGN/ASUU Agreement based on the Nimi Briggs Committee’s 2021 draft, releasing withheld salaries from the 2022 strike, settling unpaid salaries for staff on sabbatical or part-time appointments, and addressing outstanding third-party deductions. Additional concerns involve funding for university revitalization, the implementation of visitation panel reports, and adopting the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) instead of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).
