The guilty parties received various penalties, including imprisonment terms and fines ranging from N10,000 to N50,000. On Saturday, an additional 14 individuals were sentenced to three months in jail for breaching Kwara State’s environmental regulations, bringing the total number of convictions within the week to 75.

Kwara State Commissioner for Environment and Forestry, Hajia Nafisat Buge, confirmed these convictions while inspecting waste management equipment and vehicles at the ministry’s headquarters in Ilorin. She emphasized that these actions demonstrate the government’s commitment to eliminating illegal waste dumping.

Buge expressed satisfaction with the overall compliance levels in the state but urged residents to adhere to sanitation laws. She highlighted the importance of maintaining a clean environment and the role of waste management consultants in achieving this goal.

The Commissioner also stressed the government’s determination to address indiscriminate waste dumping and maintain a healthy environment. She called on waste management operators to ensure their vehicles are in good condition to effectively serve the Ilorin metropolis.

Alhaji Zakariyahu Tahir, Chairman of the Association of Waste Consultants, praised the government’s efforts and reaffirmed his association’s support in enforcing environmental laws and promoting a clean and safe environment.

The Kwara State Government had recently established a 300-member task force and a special court to strengthen the enforcement of environmental laws.
