Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has implemented three Executive Orders, which include the establishment of two new agencies and restrictions on traditional rulers’ involvement in mining and land agreements within their domains.
The newly formed Ogun State Mineral Resources Development Agency and Ogun State Landscaping and Recreation Agency are aimed at promoting responsible mineral resource management and enhancing environmental sustainability through landscaping and climate change mitigation efforts.
Governor Abiodun highlighted the importance of these measures in regulating mining activities, preventing environmental degradation, and ensuring that local communities are actively engaged in solid mineral ventures. He emphasized the protection of natural resources in the state and the empowerment of indigenous youth to participate in small-scale mining enterprises.
Furthermore, Executive Order Three prohibits traditional rulers from entering into agreements related to mining or land issues without government approval. This directive seeks to prevent unauthorized resource exploitation that some traditional leaders may facilitate, stressing compliance with state laws and the enforcement of penalties for violators.
These executive actions underscore Governor Abiodun’s dedication to promoting sustainable development and environmental stewardship in Ogun State. They are aligned with international standards aimed at preserving biodiversity and enhancing climate resilience.
