ASUU Shuts Down Universities Nationwide Over Unpaid June Salaries

More chapters of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) across Nigeria have halted academic activities due to the Federal Government’s delay in paying June 2025 salaries.

This follows a prior warning by ASUU’s National President, Chris Piwuna, who told Punch that the union would adopt a strict “no pay, no work” stance if payments were not made on time.

Despite the warning, many lecturers in public universities and polytechnics have not received their June salaries, leading to a widespread suspension of academic duties.

In Plateau State, the ASUU chapter at the University of Jos, led by Chairman Jurbe Molwus, announced a complete withdrawal of services, citing the salary delay.

“Our members have suspended lectures and statutory meetings in line with NEC’s resolution, which mandates service withdrawal if salaries are not paid by the third day of the month,” Molwus said. He added that the union’s strike monitoring team had been mobilized to ensure full compliance.

Similarly, at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi, ASUU members also stayed away from their duties. The chapter chairman, Angulu Haruna, accused the government of deliberately neglecting university staff.

“Other public servants receive their pay on time, but university workers are treated like an afterthought. The claim that delays are due to IPPIS migration is no longer acceptable,” Haruna stated.

At the University of Abuja, reports confirmed widespread lecturer absence from classrooms, with sources noting strong compliance with ASUU’s directive.

Meanwhile, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) also issued a stern warning to the Federal Government on Sunday night, threatening to embark on a nationwide strike if their salaries are not paid promptly.

Lecturers at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, are also reportedly adhering to the directive. A senior lecturer, speaking anonymously to Punch, said most academic staff had agreed to halt lectures and meetings until they are paid.
