During the opening session of a two-day national conference in Abuja on Thursday, ASUU President Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke highlighted that the monthly electricity bills for some universities range from N200 million to N300 million. In stark contrast, these institutions only receive N15 million monthly from the federal government to cover running costs, including electricity and other expenses.
Osodeke expressed his frustration, noting that while universities are allocated just N15 million to operate, each senator receives N21 million per month. He stated, “What the government provides to run the system is N15 million, yet the electricity bill alone can reach N300 million. How are we expected to cover that? We need to fund laboratories, diesel for generators, and fuel for vehicles.”
He emphasized the discrepancy in government priorities, saying, “A government that allocates only N15 million for UNILAG to operate will give one senator N21 million each month. The system receives N15 million, while an individual senator gets N21 million. That’s where our priorities lie.
