In an interview with Channels TV, Okocha, who served as Amaechi’s Chief of Staff from 2007 to 2015, openly acknowledged his involvement and claimed that the reinstated Rivers APC chairman, Chief Emeka Beke, was also implicated in the election rigging.
Recently removed as chairman of the Rivers APC Caretaker Committee by a Port Harcourt High Court and succeeded by Beke, Okocha did not hesitate to discuss his actions, asserting that he should be recognized as a “whistleblower” for his honesty.
“Regarding whether I rigged the election, I did not conceal it. I should be compensated as a whistleblower,” Okocha stated, prompting the interviewer to interject that individuals involved in election rigging should face imprisonment.
Okocha countered, “No. If you were a robber yesterday and today you confess to your past crimes, are you suggesting the law should retroactively punish you? The answer is no.”
He further explained that his candid statements were intended to deter others from using the same deceptive tactics he once employed. “When you understand a tactic and see someone else attempting to use it, you must speak out. That’s why we went to court,” he added.
When asked who had directed the election rigging, Okocha specifically implicated Beke, stating, “Yes, all of us were involved, including Emeka Beke.”
Beke, who was present during the interview, promptly denied the allegations and warned that the police might take action against Okocha for his admission. “Was I part of it during the election? Have you ever heard me say I rigged elections?” Beke asked, to which Okocha retorted, “Are you claiming you never participated under Amaechi’s government?”
Beke firmly replied, “I did not accompany you to the elections. I was not involved in any election whatsoever. If you confess and attempt to implicate me, I am not part of that. You rigged the election, and we will ask the police to arrest you for it.”
