In a statement released on Tuesday, Atiku underscored the critical role of traditional institutions in Nigeria’s governance framework and urged protection against undue state interference.

“There is a worrying trend where state governments are manipulating the procedures for appointing traditional leaders,” Atiku remarked.

While acknowledging that traditional leadership falls under state jurisdiction, he emphasized their pivotal role in governance and community stability.

“At this juncture, it’s imperative to shield traditional institutions from arbitrary state actions that jeopardize their stability,” Atiku asserted.

Highlighting the importance of traditional rulers in maintaining peace and order, he noted, “Instability in the succession processes of traditional leaders can disrupt community harmony.”

Despite lacking constitutional recognition, Atiku stressed that traditional institutions significantly contribute to economic vitality and local security.

“These institutions predate colonialism and have historically governed effectively,” Atiku affirmed.

He advocated for constitutional reforms to officially recognize and define the roles of traditional institutions, citing their crucial role in addressing local security challenges.

Atiku also called upon state governors to respect and uphold the customs represented by traditional rulers, emphasizing their cultural significance.

In recent developments, Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, reinstated Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano, four years after his dethronement by former Governor Umar Ganduje. Governor Yusuf also deposed five emirs appointed by Ganduje amidst ongoing controversies.

Meanwhile, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has expressed concerns over alleged plans by Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu to depose Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, amid heightened tensions following similar actions in Kano State.
