Atiku Calls For Swift Government Action To Curb Maiduguri Flood Crisis

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on Nigerian government agencies to accelerate their response to the ongoing flooding disaster in Maiduguri.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Atiku described the flooding as a national emergency, expressing deep concern for the people and government of Borno State as they confront the far-reaching economic and humanitarian impacts of the catastrophe.

He urged citizens to follow the government’s safety directives, particularly those related to evacuating flood-prone areas, in order to prevent further loss of life and property.

“The flooding in Maiduguri has escalated to the level of a national crisis. Reports suggest that the overflow and breach of the Alau Dam have displaced thousands, devastated farms, and triggered a humanitarian emergency across Maiduguri,” Atiku said. “According to statistics from NEMA, recent floods have damaged around 16,488 hectares of farmland in 27 states, destroyed 32,000 homes, and affected over 227,000 people.”

Atiku appealed to federal relief agencies to ramp up their efforts in addressing the disaster’s consequences. “I stand with the people and government of Borno State during this difficult time as they face significant economic challenges brought on by the flood.”

He also emphasized the need for the public to comply with government evacuation orders to minimize further risks during the crisis.

This statement comes as Maiduguri faces a critical situation, with widespread flooding causing significant disruption across the region.
