The 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stated, “I want to issue a serious warning to Nigeria’s service chiefs and military commanders: those who authorize the use of lethal force against peaceful civilian protesters will be held responsible for crimes against humanity, even after their retirement.”

Atiku also urged security agencies to provide a safe environment for protesters, emphasizing that protesting is a constitutional right. He noted, “The right to protest is firmly established by our constitution and upheld by the judiciary. It is the government’s and security agencies’ duty to ensure a secure environment for individuals exercising this right.
