Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has issued a warning against any attempts to manipulate the upcoming governorship election in Edo State. The election, scheduled for Saturday, September 21, is expected to see Edo residents turn out in large numbers to select their next governor.
Atiku, accompanied by other top members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), visited Edo to rally support for the party’s candidate. He made it clear that Edo State is not like Lagos, where, according to him, the All Progressives Congress (APC) might attempt electoral malpractice.
Speaking at a campaign event in the Ekenwan area, Atiku, who was the PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, urged Edo citizens to be vigilant and safeguard their votes from possible rigging.
He reminded the crowd of their resolve during the previous election, saying: “Four years ago, they threatened us, but we showed them that ‘Edo no be Lagos,’ didn’t we?”
Atiku encouraged the voters to protect their votes, stating: “They can’t steal votes here. Protect, defend, and ensure your votes are counted. Make sure your results are announced, and no force can change them. You are winning next week, do you agree? ‘Edo no be Lagos.’”
As Edo residents prepare to head to the polls, the main contenders in the gubernatorial race include PDP’s Asue Ighodalo, APC’s Monday Okpebholo, and Labour Party’s Olumide Akpata.
