Since the start of the nationwide protests by Nigerian youths, who are fed up with the country’s situation and are rallying under the theme “EndBadGovernance,” there have been calls for the resignation of Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Many Nigerians view his comments and remarks on the state of the nation as insensitive.
Amid the outcry over Akpabio’s performance in the Senate and the subsequent calls for his resignation, Senator Shehu Sani has weighed in.
In a recent post on his X handle, while acknowledging that the Senate President is unlikely to resign, Shehu Sani explained why senators are unlikely to pursue impeachment. He revealed that senators would be deterred from initiating an impeachment because if such a move fails, the senator behind it could face suspension.
“Removing Akpabio is only possible if a senator consults with colleagues and garners enough support to initiate an impeachment. If the plot fails, the senator may be suspended until the next election. That’s the reality,” he stated.
He further added, “By the time you discuss with one senator, before you reach home, he has already informed Akpabio about your intention to remove him. Then, you would be left on your own.”
