The Rivers State police command has apprehended a witch doctor along with 25 other individuals suspected to be part of a car-snatching syndicate, which has allegedly seized 79 cars across the state.

Presenting the suspects to journalists, Commissioner of Police for the state, Olatunji Disu, announced the seizure of a shrine believed to have been utilized by the “juju-priest” to fortify the criminals for their illicit activities.

Disu identified Chidube, Anthony, and Kelechi (a car mechanic) as key figures in the car-snatching network, highlighting Chidube’s role in training his associates and his alleged connection to all arrested suspects, while Kelechi specialized in disabling vehicle trackers. He revealed that stolen cars were often transported to Kano and Anambra states for resale, including as scrap.

“Their spiritual leader has been apprehended. He advises them on the timing of operations. Additionally, we have intercepted a group of robbers who target individuals after banking transactions. In cases of resistance, they resort to violence, and their firearms have been seized,” stated the police chief.

The syndicate, operational since January 2023, has reportedly been involved in the theft of over 40 vehicles. The perpetrators converged on Port Harcourt from various states to carry out their criminal activities, which typically involved carjacking or stealing vehicles from parking locations.

“The stolen vehicles are either sold or dispatched to a scrapyard in Mgbuka-Obosi, Onitsha, for dismantling and resale of spare parts,” explained Disu.
