Authorities Detain Minna Protest Leader Aisha Jibrin, Alongside 25 Supporters

On Monday, February 5, 2024, Minna residents took to the streets in large numbers to protest the economic challenges in the country attributed to the increasing cost of living.

The protest originated with a group of women blocking Minna-Bida Road at the well-known Kpakungu Roundabout, expressing their discontent with what they described as hardships under the Bola Tinubu administration. Subsequently, men and youths joined in, obstructing vehicle movement.

DSP Wasiu Abiodun, the spokesperson for the police command, revealed in a statement on Wednesday, February 7, that Aisha, along with two other women and 22 other individuals, was arrested.

Abiodun stated, “On 5/2/2024 at about 0700hrs, a considerable number of women and miscreants gathered, blocking Minna-Bida road and Kpakungu Roundabout, protesting against an increase in food prices. This caused significant disruption on the highway, impeding motorists, travelers, and other road users from conducting their lawful activities.”

In response, the police dispatched patrol teams led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations DCP Shehu Umar Didango. Despite attempts at persuasion, the protesters refused to clear the road, even after the Deputy Governor of Niger State, Com. Yakubu Garba, addressed the group.

Abiodun continued, “Nevertheless, the Police used minimal force to disperse the violent protesters, who retaliated by attacking the Police with dangerous weapons such as stones, bottles, sticks, cutlasses, damaging police vehicles and parts of the Kpakungu Division roof.”

During the operation, Aisha Jibrin, aged 30, Fatima Aliyu, aged 57, Fatima Isyaku, aged 43, all residing in Soje ‘A’ of Kpakungu area in Minna, and 22 other miscreants were apprehended.

Various dangerous weapons, including a bench and a stick used as barricades, three knives, one scissors, one cutlass, one saw blade, one iron pipe, four other sticks, two wraps of Indian hemp, and charms, were recovered from the suspects.

Aisha, during interrogation, claimed ignorance of the illegality of her actions, asserting that she had informed a local youth leader, Hassan, who had promised to inform the police but failed to do so.

The suspects have been taken to SCID Minna for further investigation, and they will be prosecuted. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other identified members of the violent protest.

Commissioner of Police, Niger State Command, CP Shawulu Ebenezer Danmamman, fsi, urged Nigerlites and the public to remain law-abiding, emphasizing the importance of addressing issues through appropriate authorities rather than resorting to self-help.
