Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Tuesday, Morka criticized the practice where state governors continue to “handpick” chairpersons for local governments, undermining their autonomy and administrative capabilities.
He supported the Supreme Court’s decision to grant LGs access to their allocated funds but highlighted the need for comprehensive electoral reforms. Morka urged state governors and federal authorities to collaborate on developing a transparent electoral framework that promotes scrutiny, objectivity, and independence.
“In my view, the Supreme Court rightly enabled local governments to access their funds. However, the current controversy could have been avoided. We must overhaul the electoral system governing local governments to ensure fairness and independence. Simply granting financial autonomy falls short if local leaders are appointed by governors,” Morka asserted during the interview.
