The youths, all residents of Ukum LGA, faced charges including criminal conspiracy, arson, culpable homicide, theft, armed robbery, and terrorism.
Prosecutor Mr. Jonah Uletu informed the court that the case was transferred from the Divisional Police Headquarters in Ukum, Zaki-Biam, to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Makurdi via a letter dated July 7th. According to the letter, on July 3rd, the caretaker chairman of Ukum LGA reported that bandits attacked Ayati community, Boikyo ward, killing six people. Subsequently, thousands of violent protesters began burning and destroying personal and government properties on the same day.
Among the properties destroyed were the Ukum LG Secretariat, schools, Federal Road Safety Corps office, courts, NSCDC office, Unity, Access, and UBA Banks, hotels, Benue Links park, residential buildings, INEC area office, BIRS area office, police station, NUT office, and LGC Guest House, amounting to millions of naira in damages. The protesters also caused further fatalities and attempted to invade the Ukum police division in Zaki-Biam, which was repelled by police officers on duty.
The charges against them include offenses under Sections 97, 222, 329, 337, and 289 of the Penal Code Law of Benue State (2004), Sections 1(2) and (3) of the Robbery and Firearms Act (2010), and Section 4(2) of the Abduction, Hostage-Taking, Kidnapping, Secret Cult, and Similar Activities Prohibition Law of Benue State (2017).
However, Chief Magistrate Mr. Kelvin Mbanongun did not take their pleas due to lack of jurisdiction during the initial appearance. He ordered that they be remanded at the Nigeria Correctional Centre in Makurdi and adjourned the case until August 21st for further proceedings.
