Benue Government Comments On Minimum Wage Of ₦40,000The Benue State Government has dismissed rumors about a ₦40,000 minimum wage for state civil servants, clarifying that the legal minimum is ₦70,000 as established by President Bola Tinubu.

Speculation arose on social media after claims that Governor Hyacinth Alia proposed the ₦40,000 figure during a recent meeting with workers. However, Solomon Iorpev, the Governor’s Technical Adviser on Media, Publicity, and Communication, labeled these rumors as false, noting that Alia is currently on a working visit to China.

Iorpev emphasized that the administration remains committed to fulfilling its obligations to pay employees their lawful wages. “The governor has been in China since Monday, so at what occasion did he approve ₦40,000 just three days ago?” he stated.

Joshua Abimiku, the Secretary of the Benue State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), supported Iorpev’s statements, clarifying that during negotiations, four wage options were discussed, none of which included ₦40,000.

He explained that the proposals included ₦70,000, ₦75,000, and ₦77,000, with labor favoring the ₦75,000 option. Abimiku expressed hope that the agreed-upon wage would be implemented soon, indicating that arrangements had been finalized but that the wage was not yet disbursed this month.

“Nobody’s paying less. ₦40,000 is below the national minimum wage, and I don’t think any governor is considering that. The information circulating is not accurate,” he said, urging patience as they await the government’s action.
