Guinea Mourns As Former Prime Minister And Opposition Leader Sidya Toure D!es At 81

Former Guinean Prime Minister and opposition leader, Sidya Toure, has died in Paris at the age of 81 after an illness.

Family sources confirmed that Toure died on Friday, September 25, 2026. He had reportedly been receiving medical treatment at the American Hospital of Paris after falling ill in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, where he had been living in exile.

Toure was a prominent figure in Guinea’s political landscape and led the Union of Republican Forces (UFR), one of the country’s major opposition parties. The party was among several political organisations dissolved by Guinean authorities in March 2026.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Toure left Guinea following the September 2021 military coup that brought Mamady Doumbouya to power and subsequently lived in Abidjan while continuing to participate in the country’s political affairs.

Toure first entered Guinea’s national political scene after then-President Lansana Conté appointed him prime minister in July 1996. He served in the position until March 1999, during which his administration pursued administrative and economic reforms and worked to strengthen Guinea’s engagement with international financial institutions.

Born in 1945 in Ivory Coast, Toure also spent part of his professional career there, particularly in economic and administrative roles. After leaving government, he became increasingly active in opposition politics and assumed leadership of the UFR in 2000.

He contested Guinea’s presidential elections in 2010 and 2015 as the UFR candidate but was unsuccessful on both occasions. He subsequently remained an influential voice within the country’s opposition politics.

Toure continued leading the UFR while living outside Guinea, even as political restrictions intensified under the military-led administration. The UFR and two other major opposition parties were not part of the presidential election that brought Doumbouya to power through the ballot, according to reports.

Guinea’s Prime Minister, Amadou Oury Bah, paid tribute to Toure following his death, describing him as a prominent figure who had played a role in the country’s political life for three decades.

Bah also described the late politician as a pragmatic reformer and said the country would honour his memory.

Toure’s death marks the loss of a veteran figure whose political career spanned several decades and included government service, presidential contests and prolonged involvement in Guinea’s opposition politics.
