Benue State Imposes Protest Ban In Council Area After Recent Attacks

Additionally, the Council has sanctioned the establishment of a Bureau of Homeland Security. This bureau will facilitate prompt coordination between the governor’s office and security agencies to swiftly address security issues in the state.

Furthermore, the Council has extended the existing curfew in the entire Sankera area until further notice. Governor Hyacinth Alia, represented by Deputy Governor Sam Ode, announced these measures after a joint security meeting. The newly formed bureau will be overseen by a Director General appointed by the governor.

Addressing recent unrest in Ukum Local Government Area, Governor Alia reported that the Security Council’s directive aims to maintain peace, particularly following a violent protest in Ayati community, Ukum LGA, resulting in casualties and property damage.

In response, the Security Council has recommended the establishment of a Judicial Panel of Inquiry to investigate the destruction of public and private property during the protest.
