Benue State Legislature Approves Three-Year Terms For Local Government LeadershipThe Benue State House of Assembly has amended the 2007 Local Government Act, establishing a three-year tenure for elected local government officials.

This amendment occurred on Friday, just hours before the scheduled local government elections on Saturday. During a session presided over by Speaker Hyacinth Dajoh, the Assembly unanimously agreed to amend the law following a thorough clause-by-clause review of the bill.

As a result, the previous two-year tenure outlined in sections 13(2) and 27(3) of the former law has been replaced with the newly approved three-year term. After the legislative process, Dajoh stated that the amendment was essential to provide local government chairpersons with adequate time to implement developmental initiatives in their communities.

The bill has now been forwarded to the governor for his assent.
