Kogi Deputy Governor Reports Flooding Affects 70 Communities

As the State Chairman of the 2024 Kogi State Flood Disaster Response Committee, Comrade Salifu noted that despite proactive measures taken by the government to address this year’s flooding, the situation in Edeha and surrounding areas has become unmanageable.

“It is clear that the current situation exceeds what the Kogi State Government can handle; we cannot do it alone,” he emphasized. While the extent of property damage, including farmland losses, is still being assessed, Salifu expressed relief that there have been no reported fatalities in the affected communities.

He added that many residents from the flooded areas have relocated to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps established by the state government.

Chief Abdullahi Isah of Edeha community confirmed that over 70 local communities are underwater and expressed gratitude for the state government’s timely intervention, which has helped save lives and property. He noted that most affected individuals have moved to higher ground and are currently residing in the IDP camps set up in the area.

The paramount ruler of the community, Ohimegye Kotonkarfe, Saidu Akawu-Salihu, stated that all communities along the affected routes have been inundated. He highlighted that areas such as Gaduma, Gabor, Ikumo, Edama, Apaku, Egasema, and Oka are also currently submerged.
