Big Boost For Rivers United As Ani Ozoemena Makes Full Training Return After Major Surgery

Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side Rivers United have confirmed that goalkeeper Ani Ozoemena has returned to full training following surgery for a serious injury that threatened his football career.

The Port Harcourt-based club disclosed that it spent approximately ₦14 million on the goalkeeper’s surgery and covered all expenses associated with his rehabilitation throughout his recovery.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Rivers United described the financial support as part of its commitment to prioritising players’ welfare and ensuring that injured footballers receive the necessary medical attention without the burden of treatment costs.

The club reaffirmed its player-first approach, explaining that Ozoemena’s recovery reflects its determination to support players through serious injuries and rehabilitation.

In March 2026, Rivers United reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of its players, citing Ozoemena’s treatment as an example of the club’s policy.

The club also highlighted the recovery of right-back Ebuka Akobundu, who returned to action after spending 378 days on the sidelines with an abdominal injury.

Ozoemena’s return to full training is expected to provide a boost for Rivers United as they continue their NPFL campaign, following an extended period away from the pitch.

Meanwhile, Bendel Insurance have confirmed that goalkeeper Joshua Baba has rejoined the team after previously being declared absent without official leave (AWOL).

Baba, a former Enyimba goalkeeper, sustained an injury during Bendel Insurance’s opening fixture of the season against Warri Wolves at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.

The club had reportedly granted him two weeks to recover from the injury before he travelled to Plateau State to visit his family. However, his failure to return to Benin City within the approved period prompted the management to declare him AWOL.

Bendel Insurance subsequently confirmed that the goalkeeper resurfaced in Lagos on Saturday night and joined his teammates at their hotel as they prepared for their Matchday Eight encounter against Sporting Lagos.

The Benin-based club also expressed appreciation to media organisations and other stakeholders who had followed the situation since the announcement of Baba’s absence.

The management reiterated its commitment to maintaining discipline, professionalism and accountability in the club’s operations.

While Rivers United celebrate Ozoemena’s return following a costly medical procedure, Bendel Insurance will look to move forward with Baba back in the squad as the NPFL campaign continues.
