Big Return! Taiwo Awoniyi Recalled To Super Eagles Squad After Two-Year Absence

Taiwo Awoniyi has been recalled to the Super Eagles squad as a replacement for the injured Victor Osimhen ahead of Nigeria’s opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Awoniyi’s return comes after Osimhen was ruled out of the upcoming fixtures while continuing his recovery from a right adductor muscle injury. The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed the striker’s inclusion as coach Éric Chelle adjusts his squad for the crucial qualifiers.

The recall marks Awoniyi’s return to the senior national team after his most recent appearance for Nigeria in 2024. The Coventry City forward has earned the opportunity following his return to regular club football and will now provide another attacking option for Chelle.

Awoniyi recently joined Coventry City from Nottingham Forest and has featured for the Sky Blues this season. His return to the Super Eagles comes at an important moment, with Nigeria preparing for the start of their Group L campaign.

The Super Eagles are scheduled to host Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on September 25 before travelling to Bissau to face Guinea-Bissau four days later.

Osimhen had initially been included in Chelle’s 24-man squad despite his injury, but his continued recovery means he will not be available for the two qualifiers. Galatasaray has informed the Nigerian team that the striker remains under treatment.

Awoniyi will now join an attacking group that includes Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon and Tolu Arokodare as Nigeria begins its campaign for a place at the 2027 AFCON tournament.

The Super Eagles will be looking to make a strong start when they take on Madagascar in Uyo before travelling to Guinea-Bissau for the second qualifying fixture.
